Defamiliarization

Defamiliarization occurs when care work is no longer performed in the family, but is increasingly provided by welfare state services and benefits that promote public provision and care for tasks that were previously organized within the family. This is intended in particular to make women more available to the labor market, as defamilializing services relieve them of private care obligations (cf. Esping-Anderson 1999).
