Care needs are understood to be the total extent of what is required in terms of care services for a society, a group or an individual person. Care needs are the basic needs felt by people, which are expressed in the form of perceived needs that relate to caring and providing for others. Care needs must be met so that people can lead a dignified life. Existential care needs may be very extensive in concrete cases, but they are neither endless nor arbitrarily multipliable. Their fulfillment is always linked to the question of who is responsible for them in a society. In most societies, the fulfillment of care needs is profoundly gendered.
