Gender Care Gap

The gender care gap is the time gap in the distribution of care work between the sexes. The Second Report on Gender Equality calculated a gender care gap of over 50 percent for Germany. There states: “According to this, women spend an average of 52.4 percent per day – the equivalent of 87 minutes – more time for unpaid care work than men” (BMFSFJ 2019: 171). Closely related to the gender care gap are other gendered gaps, e.g., in the remuneration of gainful employment (gender pay gap) or the monetary size of pensions (gender pension gap).
