The increasing participation of women in the workforce has resulted in more and more of them shifting unpaid care work into the paid sector, thereby increasing the demand for paid care services. If these care services are not (or cannot be) provided, or are not provided to a sufficient extent, a service gap arises (cf. Geissler 2002).
